Jack's Story

Starting Again in a City of Strangers

I’m Jack. After leaving my hometown of Brighton, I moved to Croydon for my first full-time job as a woodworker.

It was a big change – I didn’t know anyone in London or Croydon and realised quickly that I needed to get out there and meet new people.

Living alone for the first time was a huge adjustment, and I found myself struggling without familiar faces around me and often feeling lonely and disconnected.

Taking Back Control

I realised that if I wanted to feel better, I had to take action – no one else could do it for me. Getting out there and trying new things became my way of taking control.

That’s when I discovered The Great Friendship Project, which was exactly what I needed to socialise and build new relationships.

Making connections hasn’t always been easy for me, as I sometimes struggle with my speech and so joining the project was a game-changer.

The board game nights were fun and a great way to relax, while the social walks gave me the chance to get outside, move around, and feel mentally refreshed.

Being around others and having simple, enjoyable conversations did wonders for my mental health and the activities gave me a space where I could socialise at my own pace and enjoy being part of a community.

Rebuilding Confidence, One Step at a Time

Over time, I’ve made some friends that have helped make living in Croydon feel less lonely.

One of the biggest changes since joining the project has been my confidence. Living on my own has been a big adjustment, but I’ve learned to embrace it. I’ve even restarted a hobby I loved – judo.

After a 10-year break, I’m back at it, starting with a white belt in adult classes to rebuild my skills.

I’ve also been working with a speech therapist to improve my communication, and I feel more confident than ever. Taking control of my own happiness through socialising, hobbies, and self-improvement has been incredibly empowering.

For anyone who feels lonely or unsure about how to make new connections, I’d say this: it might feel nerve-wracking at first, but new friends and new adventures are out there waiting for you.
